Watermelon is a fruit of high water content of about 92% and high nutritional content. Water melon contains lycopene which is the pigment responsible for the redness of the inner parts of the fruit as well as the redness of tomatoes, red grapes and guava.

Lycopene is an antioxidant that has the ability of protecting cells from damage. It is known to prevent heart disease and cancer. Its powerful antioxidant actions are effective in maintaining the strength, thickness and fluidity of cell membranes which serves as the guard screening what goes in and out of the cell. Lycopene also prevents diabetes, cataract, aging of skin and may help in treating infertility.

Water melon also contains vitamins A, B6 and C, antioxidants and amino acids and some quantity of potassium.

Water melon hydrates and refreshes the body because of its high water content. Recently, I was coming from school one sunny afternoon after long hours of lectures when I saw one of these Mallams that sell watermelon by the road side. He was cutting watermelons into smaller affordable quarters. I sped up my movement to him, took one large one and paid him. On getting home about 15minutes after, the first thing I did was to devour the watermelon and it refreshed me! I felt calmness through my body and I could continue with the day’s activities.

Citrulline, an amino acid in watermelon, may reduce muscle soreness. Its juice appears to enhance the bio-availability of citrulline.

Consuming watermelon before exercise or after is effective in reducing muscle pain. It can be juiced or made into smoothie. It is also a common fruit in fruit salads.

I love taking my smoothie completely fruity but you can also add yoghurt or vanilla extract. It’ll still be fabulous! You can check out my step-by-step how to prepare smoothie.

This Ramadan season, I urge my Muslim readers to increase fruits intake as they are vital during fasting. They provide the nutrients needed by body and keep one healthy.

Much love😍
